How to use cardiac, diaphragm and lung ultrasound to improve the assessment of the patients to wean from mechanical ventilation? Here a narrative review on Current Opinion in Critical Care Available on Pubmed   Abstract Purpose of review: Due to heart, lung and diaphragm interactions during weaning from mechanical ventilation, an ultrasound integrated approach may be useful […]

Can we use pulmonary artery acceleration time to estimate pulmonary artery pressure in critically ill patients? Maybe not..have a look to the free full text here from the Ultrasound Journal   Abstract Background: Estimation of pulmonary pressures is of key importance in acute cardiovascular and respiratory failure. Pulmonary artery acceleration time (PAAT) has emerged as reliable parameter for […]

How is the actual training during residency in Italy? Have a look to the national survey comparing directors’ and residents’ perspectives. We are ok only for ultrasound-guided central line, it remains a lot to do for all the rest!   Free full text here on BMC medical education   Abstract Background: Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) has […]

A great collaboration with Pr. Corradi: how to use ultrasound to reliably detect central vein catheter tip and replace chest x-ray   Full text here on Critical Care   Abstract Background: To assess the usefulness of pre-operative contrast-enhanced transthoracic echocardiography (CE-TTE) and post-operative chest-x-ray (CXR) for evaluating central venous catheter (CVC) tip placements, with trans-esophageal echocardiography […]

A newly appeared dynamic linear-arborescent air bronchogram was 100% specific for ventilator-associated pneumonia in COVID-19 patients. A high ventilator-associated pneumonia lung ultrasound score (or an increase in the lung ultrasound score) strongly oriented to ventilator-associated pneumonia. In this multicenter Italian retrospective study leaded by Dr. Fanelli in Turin, we compared veno-venous ECMOs for ARDS in H1N1 influenza and COVID-19. Any cause mortality at 60 days after ECMO initiation was higher in COVID-19 (46% vs. 27%). This difference however was not significant after multivariable adjustment; older age and longer hospital length of stay […]

We are the Editor’s Pick! See how to use ventilator waveforms to reliably assess patient’s spontaneous activity and patient–ventilator interaction! Full text here on Critical Care   Abstract Background Whether respiratory efforts and their timing can be reliably detected during pressure support ventilation using standard ventilator waveforms is unclear. This would give the opportunity to […]

How to use lung ultrasound score and its variation with PEEP titration to predict the impact of higher PEEP on ICP in brain injured patients. A collaboration with Dr Robba. Full text here on Critical Care   Abstract Background: The effects of positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) on lung ultrasound (LUS) patterns, and their rela- tionship […]
